When water containing iron and manganese passes through the bed, it oxidized and precipitated by contact and hydrogen sulfide H2S gas eliminated by oxidation to sulfate and insoluble precipitate. Periodic regeneration cycle with a weak solution of potassium permanganate restore the oxidizing capacity of the bed.
When water containing iron or manganese passes through the filter bed, birm acts as an insoluble catalyst to enhance the reaction between dissolved oxygen and iron compounds and produces ferric hydroxide which precipitates and easily filtered.
